Top 5 tattoo aftercare mistakes (and how to avoid them)

Whether you’re new to tattoos or a seasoned collector, proper aftercare is vital to keeping your ink looking its best. While the hard part (getting inked) might be over, taking care of your tattoo properly is just as important as the session itself. A beautifully done tattoo can quickly lose its appeal if it's not cared for correctly during the healing process.

Unfortunately, many people unknowingly make simple mistakes that can lead to irritation, infection or even faded artwork.

Here are the top 5 aftercare mistakes & how to steer clear of them:

1.Overwashing or underwashing the tattoo

Some people scrub their tattoos too frequently, while others neglect cleaning altogether. Overwashing can irritate the skin, stripping away natural oils necessary for healing. On the other hand, underwashing can lead to a buildup of bacteria and increase the risk of infection.

2. Using the wrong products

A fresh tattoo is essentially an open wound,. Opt for mild, fragrance free, antibacterial soaps and tattoo specific healing ointments. Avoid using products with fragrance and dyes as they can cause irritation, dryness or even allergic reactions. Be sure to patch test the product as well.

3. Picking or scratching the tattoo

As your tattoos heal, they’ll start to dry out and itch. Picking and stratchng can lead to patchy healing or scarring. It’s best to let any scabs and flaky skin fall off naturally. If it gets too itchy, gently slap or moisturise with a fragrance free lotion.

4. Exposure to the sun or water too soon

Thinking of heading to the beach or tanning with a fresh tattoo? Bad idea. Not only can UV rays fade the ink, pools or natural bodies of water can introduce bacteria. It’s best to keep your new ink out of direct sunlight and avoid submerging into water for at least 2-3 weeks (or until your artists say it's safe).

5. Not following your artist’s instructions

Deviating from your artist’s aftercare advice can affect the final look of your new ink. Every tattoo artist may use different inks, techniques and/or bandaging methods, meaning generic advice may not account for these variables. Always follow your artist’s specific aftercare instructions. If you're unsure about something, don’t be afraid to reach out directly to them.

A tattoo is a lifelong commitment not only in design but also in care. Avoiding these common aftercare mistakes can make all the difference between a beautifully healed piece of art and a regretful experience. When in doubt, always consult your tattoo artist. Your skin & ink will thank you.
